Esmarch Bandages and Tourniquets
An esmarch bandage or esmarch tourniquet is traditionally a soft, rubber bandage that can be used in emergencies to expel excess blood from a limb that has had its blood supply cut off through the use of a tourniquet. The limb is usually elevated and the esmarch is used when blood pooling in the limb could complicate the surgery. A bloodless area is usually required to apply general anesthetic and for regional nerve block. The technique was actually developed on the battlefield and has since been used in all levels of medicine when necessary – usually following an emergency when serious injury has occurred.
